THS School Association
- Would you like to make a difference to your child’s education?
- Would you like to ensure that they have the facilities and equipment that will allow them to fully explore their subjects and interests?
- Can you spare a few hours a year or a term?
If so then we would like you to join us.
The School Association fulfils a vital role in the school by providing those extra things that can really make a difference to your child’s education and experience. It does this by raising funds through a range of activities throughout the school year.
We are looking for help in a number of ways from literally a couple of hours a year to a couple of hours a month. Or one other very simple and time free way – by joining our 500 club, details below.
The great thing about the School Association is you can contribute as much or as little time as you like, from helping out at one event to joining the committee and helping shape our activities.
If you would like to join the committee please email THSA@tytheringtonhs.co.uk
Or if you would rather just help out at one event please select from the activities below and either give Pat Lomas a call, at the school, on 01625 610 220 or email THSA@tytherintonghs.co.uk

Frequently Asked Questions
How is the association different from my Child’s primary school P.T.A.?In some ways it isn’t. Although there are more children at Tytherington it doesn’t follow that many more parents are actively involved. The Association still comprises like-minded parents who want to be involved with the school and to help make it the best possible place for our children to be from Monday to Friday for 40 weeks of the year.
We are actively involved in fundraising like most primary schools PTAs. You could be too – with no strings attached. If you have an hour to spare one evening or you could spare a two hours at a weekend, once or twice a year. – you could use it to help your children’s school.
In other ways it is. Our School now has to compete with other schools to attract the large sums of money that make our school the best place to learn. Active campaigning by the governing body and senior management team has resulted in the past in:• Closed-circuit security cameras for the school grounds,
• The largest modern astro turf in Macclesfield,
• An unrivalled state-of-the–art Technology block,
• A new English block.
• Improved specialist facilities e.g. Sports Hall.
The School Association plays a role by joining the fight for even better facilities for our children by lobbying for these specialist facilities.
Why does the Association need to be involved in these activities?
We provide an extra and independent voice, which will be listened to by local councillors and politicians. We have influence and we can campaign positively and actively for our children. After all, we have a vested interest in the success of our children’s school.
So who can we influence to help our children?
The Local Education Authority. Local councillors have a substantial say in which projects receive planning permission and which projects should be allocated money from community funds. Many of these local councillors live in our area and have children either at our school or at other schools. We need to make sure that they fight for our school’s future and that they’re not supporting money going elsewhere.
Local councillors even have a say in who can bid for lottery money. It cannot be done without the councils support, as a successful bid requires matched funding from the council.
The Department for Education has emphasised the importance of parent power and has passed legislation, which gives parents considerable influence. We must use this power to ensure the best for our children. The DFE will respond to our independent voice.
Together we can work with teachers and governors for a better education for our children.
Are there other ways in which I can be involved?
Of course. One of the main purposes is still fund raising which takes a lot of time and effort and is made easier if more people are involved. We will entertain any idea which friends bring along, especially if there’re ones that have already proven successful elsewhere.
Also we hold social events, which are minor money-spinners. The primary aim of these is to bring friends, parents and children together in a social context. We hold quiz evening, discos and fashion shows.
We are active supporters of events organised by the school. We provide refreshments for many different functions like Open evenings and concerts and members of the committee represent the Association at school events, sometimes addressing the parents about our activities. Parents sometimes accompany school visits enabling trips to take place where a set number of adults are needed without too much disruption to the lessons of others still in school. Parents have helped in the library and with paired reading schemes.
So how do I get involved?
Share your previous experiences with others so that together we can widen our activities and our impact at Tytherington. Share your enthusiasm by volunteering the time you can afford to do specific tasks – say exactly what you want to do and how much time you have to do it.

500 Club
Over the past few years as spare time has become less we have found it increasingly more difficult to raise additional funds for our children for items such as the P A System & other extra curricular activities. Many parents would like to support fund raising events but find it difficult to attend. Traditional events such as barn dances are expensive to stage as we have to pay for a band and we need to sell a lot of tickets to just break even.
We have been running a 500 Club for the last 5 years in an attempt to plug the gap and unlike the National Lottery ALL proceeds go to benefit either YOUR children or the winners. We have a growing membership as more and more parents chose to support school in this way.
In brief we are inviting parents (or staff) to join by paying £5 per month by Standing Order for 5 numbers. If you wish to pay 12 months in advance by cash or cheque the minimum is £12 for one number. At present we have about 230 numbers so are paying £70, £20 & £10. We have entries from 20 down to 1 per month. All amounts are welcome. We have raised just over £5,000 to date.
We have simple rules. The monthly draw will be made at the first School Association meeting after the close of the month for all numbers that have been paid for by the end of the previous month. There is no upper limit to the numbers per person but a minimum of £5 per month for standing orders. The draw is usually a month or two in arrears as statements arrive midmonth and we do not meet every month.
The winners will receive their cheque by post.
As the school website is developed the winning numbers will be listed on the School Association page and also in THS Life.
If you wish to participate please return the Standing Order Form or 12 months payment if cheque or cash preferred.
